SUSANA MARTINEZ RESPONDS TO RICHARDSON/DENISH USE OF STATE RESOURCES IN POLITICAL ATTACK
Governor & Lieutenant Governor’s Official Website Posts Guest Commentary Criticizing Martinez, Defending Flawed Pit Rule
Las Cruces – Susana Martinez, Republican gubernatorial candidate today issued the following statement in response to the Richardson/Denish Administration’s use of both the Governor and Lieutenant Governor’s official website paid with taxpayer dollars to launch a political attack against the Doña Ana County District Attorney:
“In using the Administration’s official website to post a commentary attacking me for opposing their flawed and job-killing Pit Rule, Bill Richardson and Diane Denish have once again demonstrated contempt for the New Mexico taxpayer. Diane Denish has already been caught frivolously spending economic stimulus funds on Christmas cards for campaign supporters, using the state jet as an air-taxi service for her friends and family, and misusing state resources to prepare and distribute campaign news releases. Now, the Richardson/Denish Administration is using their taxpayer-funded website to launch negative attacks against campaign opponents. As governor, I will put a stop to the culture in Santa Fe whereby politicians misuse, waste, and abuse tax dollars believing it is their money to do with as they please.”
BACKGROUND:
“Environmental activists this week have challenged the Republican claim the pit rule was not based on science, specifically challenging Martinez’s opinion on the statewide rule. John Bartlit and Don Neeper of New Mexico Citizens for Clean Air and Water in a ‘guest commentary’ published on Gov. Bill Richardson’s Office Web site claim Martinez’s pit rule opinion fails to consider more than 5,000 pages of transcribed scientific testimony or the economic slowdown’s effect on the oil and gas industry where energy prices are at record lows. ‘The political hopeful also shaves the economics down to nothing, again tutored by the oil and gas lobby,’ the opinion states of Martinez.” (James Monteleone, “Republican Candidates For Governor Voice Opposition To Pit Rule,” The Daily Times, 2/5/10)
